City of East Ellijay Public Safety Overview:

The City of East Ellijay provides multiple public safety services, some directly and some through contracts or agreements with other agencies.

The East Ellijay Public Safety Division encompasses the police department, code enforcement, municipal court, building inspection, and city planning. The Public Safety Division is supervised by the Director of Public Safety who serves as the Chief of Police, and  oversees the other departments listed above.

The Director of Public Safety is Larry Callahan. Director Callahan has been a certified law enforcement officer since 1989 and a certified police chief since 2000.

The East Ellijay Police Department is a full-service police department providing law enforcement services to the citizens of East Ellijay, as well as, the many visitors and commuters who frequent the city.

The police department is made up of 7 full-time officers with day-to-day operations being supervised by Asst. Chief of Police Shane Bowman.

Assistant Chief of Police, Shane Bowman, has been in law enforcement since 2002. He started his career at the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office before joining the East Ellijay Police Dept. in 2007. Asst. Chief Bowman has served as a Patrol Officer. Sergeant, Lieutenant, and now serves as Asst. Chief of Police.

I take pride in all of our public safety departments from the police, to city planning and building inspection, to our municipal court. The City Planning department oversees all building and construction projects within the city. Information on zoning requirements, signage, etc. can be accessed through this website.
